GRADING
The new student focuses on physical coordination and memorizing words and basic physical movements. Further down the line, the student concerns self gradually with interaction with the partner i.e., what effect one is having on partner and vice versa. But the central concern is consciousness and control of the self.
TECHNIQUES

Techniques - Aikido techniques are all done in contact with partner. Self-management (of body and mind) is always the challenge while performing specific techniques and movements.
Ukemi - Aikido techniques are all partnered, so it is important how to be the recipient of techniques safely and constructively. Self-management is of course involved, but the challenge is how to participate and not be a passive object.
Conduct / Etiquette - Much of the practice and dojo culture is absorbed by repeated contact and the individual student's becoming better able to observe and understand. Safety, integrity, and responsibility - and bringing about a better self - are nurtured by etiquette and attention to conduct.
Gradings serve as both motivational and content boosts. The content of tests always includes previous material, as it is core. The student's process is one of deepening understanding and broadening ability.
